Hall for Cornwall starts production work with Cornwall Playhouse Productions

Over two days, we listened to beautifully prepared speeches, sight-reading of scripts, and songs to be sung in our new productions. It struck me how much I’d missed being in the presence of live performances.
This Thursday, at Falmouth University, Cornwall Playhouse Productions with Royo Productions held auditions for our opening of Fisherman’s Friends and our own Christmas production of Cinderella. Both creative teams met with over a hundred talented Southwest actors in socially distanced rehearsal rooms at the AMATA facility.

Yes, we’ve filled our lives with Netflix series, which have entertained us during the lockdown. There is nothing like being in a room, be it a small room or a theatre auditorium, which we will unveil in October this year. Without a screen between us or the realistic settings of a multi-million-pound production, I realised I missed the interaction between the actor and the audience this week. I forgot it’s a partnership in making an emotional experience or imagined place. A few days before our auditions, my writers delivered the Cinderella script used during the day’s work. It was the first time we’d heard their words out loud. In being caught out, a tear rolled down my cheek for the chanteuses and storytellers in their well-prepared work.

In the next few days, I wondered why my emotions had taken over. I’m a man who’s worked in theatre for over three decades. Of course, the answer is that we need arts and culture in our daily lives. Many people are involved in that creative process to get to where performance buzzes with an audience. For me, it’s all about teamwork; when an actor creates that moment when the audience can hear a pin drop in an auditorium, many people make that moment happen. It might be the actor himself or the bar staff who keep quiet for that dramatic moment. Having worked to build a multimillion new theatre, I have to say I've pre-match nerves about starting production work again and unveiling Hall for Cornwall’s new auditorium, Cornwall Playhouse. It’s exciting times.
